About the session

What happens during a session?

The technique is taught in-person on a one-to-one basis, with lessons usually lasting around 45 minutes (longer for the first lesson). Regular lessons – at least at the beginning – are important.

It is taught through gentle hands-on guidance and discussion to encourage the letting go of harmful habits of muscle tension that occur as a reaction to everyday living such as sitting, standing, walking.

Semi-supine

Part of the lesson usually also includes lying down in the classic Alexander Technique semi-supine position with knees bent and the head supported. This position encourages further muscular release as the body is fully supported which allows maximum relief and support for the back.

The back and joints are freed of weight and the spine is encouraged to lengthen, with the intervertebral discs benefitting from the release of pressure that this position allows.

Enjoyable, relaxing, informative

The Alexander Technique make us more conscious of our patterns of reaction and accompanying harmful habits of muscle tension.

When we learn move and hold ourselves with less muscle tension, the head, neck and back begin to re-align, back to their natural balance. Cultivating this re-alignment is a primary focus of the sessions.

The session should be a relaxing, informative and enjoyable experience.
